Workshop: Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education

22.04.10

FROM 12:30 PM TO 1:30 PM: Presented by: Dr. William L. Vanderburgh

In March 1987, Arthur Chickering and Zelda Gamson published, "Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education," in the AAHE Bulletin. http://www.aahea.org/bulletins/articles/sevenprinciples1987.htm

Their advice is still very relevant and useful for us today as we think about ways to improve undergraduate education (including retention and graduation rates). The centerpiece of the article is a list of seven practices found through empirical research to be consistently present in courses where student learning is highest (measured both through objective tests and student self-reports). In our session, the principles will be introduced and discussion invited about ways we can try to include more of them in our individual classrooms and collective programs.

Good practice in undergraduate education:

1.Encourages contacts between students and faculty
2.Develops reciprocity and cooperation among students
3.Uses active learning techniques
4.Gives prompt feedback
5.Emphasizes time on task
6.Communicates high expectations
7.Respects diverse talents and ways of learning
