These four sites collect video lectures on scientific, humanities, government, and business topics by prominent thinkers. I've sampled a number of the talks and found them to be extremely valuable. This informative and provocative video contains a Library of Congress presentation by Dr. Michael Wesch, a cultural anthropologist at Kansas State University, who explores the digital ethnography of YouTube. Wesch and his students conduct their research using "participant observation" on YouTube. Wesch makes very effective use of XML, screen captures, music, pictures, re-mixing, and video presentation techniques to convey his analyses of the cultural significance of Web 2.0 media trends. Wesch's work is a fine example of using a medium to explain a medium--something like Marshall McCluhan using Television to explain the impact of TV on society. WideOpenEducation is a promising new blog that focuses on resources for higher education. The weblog is sponsored by the same creator who developed the excellent Open Education Datatbase (OEDb). The WOE site will include an rss feed for subscribers and will be searchable by key words. It will be interesting to see how this site develops. _____JH

Grainne Conole of OpenLearn presents a view of how Web 2.0 technologies can influence pedagogical approaches. The models and ideas in Conole's presentation are worth considering by learning design professionals whose task is to facilitate the construction of online courses.
