School of Biological Sciences: Social structure and parasite transmission in Australian skinks: why are stable social alliances so rare in lizards? Professor Michael Bull School of Biological Sciences Flinders University One of the costs of living in social groups is the enhanced transmission of pathogens among group members, but all vertebrate animal taxa, except reptiles, have commonly overcome this cost. The Egernia group of Australian skinks is unique in having many species with stable social associations. I will explore the nature of these associations (and the social networks they generate), the consequences for transmission of parasites and pathogens, and a model to explain how sociality has emerged in this one lizard lineage.
