The Beacons Exhibition showcases a design project by the current first year architecture students at the University of Queensland. The students were asked to design and make a light ‘beacon’ in order to explore the concept of simultaneous opposites. Each student was given a word couplet composed of two opposing words, which was to be abstracted and evoked in the beacon. Constructed primarily in paper and card-based products, the beacon enabled students to explore complex ideas and how these ideas can be materialised in an artifact; which is a core skill for architects. The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th May 2009, and is part of the International Museum Day (18 May) and Museums Alight! celebrations, an annual week-long event that provides the opportunity for museums and galleries to showcase their collections, exhibitions and events to the public while taking part in the global celebration of International Museum Day.

12.00pm - 1.00pm Exhibition Floor Talk: Join artist Fiona Foley and co-curator Michele Helmrich on a guided tour of the exhibition `Fiona Foley: Forbidden`. This is the first major exhibition to survey the work of this leading Australian artist. Her diverse artistic practice has, over the past 15 years, encompassed photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture, video, installation and public art. With a history of exhibitions featuring uncompromising titles such as `No shades of white` and `Lick my black art`, Foley’s work traces the ongoing significance of Australia’s colonial histories. Individual works explore a broad range of themes that relate to frontier violence, race relations, sexuality, and the history of opium in Queensland. . 1.00pm – 2.30pm Panel Discussion: Invisible Histories Join a panel discussion on Fiona Foley’s art practice and the theme of invisible histories with the artist, Dr Fiona Nicholl and Dr Jonathan Richards. The discussion will be chaired by Mr Andrew Boe. Dr Fiona Nicoll is the author of `From Diggers to Drag Queens` (Pluto Press 2001) a study of twentieth century Australian identity and various publications in the following areas: queer theory, critical race and whiteness studies, reconciliation and Indigenous sovereignties and cultural studies of gambling. Recent publications include a study of The Australian newspaper`s `theatrical` representation of Indigenous affairs during the `Howard years` and a comparative study of cultural representations of Indigenous gambling in Australia and the United States, which explores how discourses of addiction are used to mediate sovereignty struggles past and present. Dr Jonathan Richards is a professional historian who has worked with Indigenous people throughout Queensland. His areas of expertise are death, frontier violence, and the experiences of Indigenous people under the state`s criminal justice system. Jonathan`s book, `The Secret War` (UQP 2008), is a detailed and comprehensive examination of the notorious Native Police, a frontier paramilitary unit used to smash Indigenous resistance to European colonisation in Queensland. Mr. Andrew Boe is a Brisbane based barrister with an interest in conversations about Indigenous art and culture; especially that which reflects its response to the colonial manifestations of `whiteness`. In his previous practice as a solicitor he was engaged in cases which dealt with issues such as `the battered woman` defences to murder, inquests into Aboriginal deaths in police custody, swearing offences, which have resulted in imprisonment for indigenous urban dwellers, and native title disputes.
