Focusing on artists whose primary medium is photography and who are extending the parameters of contemporary photographic practice, the exhibition explores themes concerning local history, the landscape, constructed identities and environments, sites of struggle and memento mori. Included in the exhibition are artists Paul Adair, Camilla Birkeland, Eric Bridgeman, Ray Cook, Marian Drew, Shane Fitzgerald, Joachim Froese, Mari Hirata, Peter Milne, Maurice Ortega, Martin Smith and Carl Warner. Dr Peter Milne is a Brisbane based photomedia artist, with a special interest in the representation of history. He teaches Visual Communication in the School of Journalism and Communication at The University of Queensland. Peter has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally and his work is held in the collections of the Queensland Centre for Photography, Brisbane; Monash Gallery of Art, Melbourne; Victorian Arts Centre, Melbourne; Horsham Regional Art Gallery, Victoria; State Library of Victoria, Melbourne; Daryl Hewson Collection, Brisbane; and National Library of Australia, Canberra. `The state we’re in: Contemporary Queensland photography` showcases new work by a selection of Queensland’s leading photographers. Join Tracey Moffatt one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists as she talks about her work and practice, including the ‘First jobs series’ and video work on display in NEW. Selected Recent Acquistions 2007 – 2008. Since her first solo exhibition in Sydney in 1989, Tracey Moffatt has had numerous solo exhibitions in major museums around the world. Working in photography, film and video, Moffatt first gained significant critical acclaim when her short film Night Cries was selected for official competition at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. Her first feature film, beDevil, was also selected for Cannes in 1993. In 1997, she was invited to exhibit in the Aperto section of the Venice Biennale. A major exhibition of Moffatt’s work was held at the Dia Center for the Arts in New York in 1997-1998, which consolidated her international reputation. Recently, comprehensive survey exhibitions of Moffatt’s work have been held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and the Hasselblad Centre in Goteburg, Sweden. In 2007 a new monograph, The Moving Images of Tracey Moffatt, was published by Charta Publishers, Milan. Tracey Moffatt was the recipient of the 2007 Infinity Award for art by the International Center of Photography, New York. Infinity Awards are given for outstanding achievements in photography by honoring individuals with distinguished careers in the field and by identifying future luminaries.
